|To-go||Sit and Savour|
Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk was a charming, witty, well-written adaptation of the real life of Margaret Fishback, who found herself a copywriter in early-to-mid 1900s in NYC, despite being a woman.
Author Kathleen Rooney depicts this tough old woman through an evening walk on New Year’s Eve.
At 85 years old, Lillian Boxfish sets off for a walk to her neighborhood restaurant for her last dinner of 1984. During her stroll, we encounter bartenders, friends, criminals and more in real time. But, we also reflect on moments in her life that brought her to where she is today.
As we learn more about her journey through advertising, marriage and motherhood, we learn that Lillian Boxfish is a remarkable woman that we’d all love to meet.
Margaret Fishback (or Lillian Boxfish) worked in advertising for Macy’s and in 1932 was described by a New York magazine as “the highest-paid advertising woman in the world.”
In addition to writing ad copy, she published her verse in magazines and books:
- I Feel Better Now, Verses (1932)
- One to a Customer: Collected Poems (1937)
- Safe Conduct: When to Behave—And Why (1938)
- Look Who’s a Mother! (1945)
- Poems Made Up to Take Out (1963)
- A Child’s Book of Natural History (1969)

Both Amber and J.Mackenzie received this title from Book of the Month last year.
J. Mackenzie’s Review:
I personally found this book delightful. Lillian is a pleasure to get to know, despite her imperfections. She’s another strong, ambitious, sensitive, beautiful woman that I was glad I had the joy of meeting throughout the pages of the book.
I loved this book! I cracked it open right after the new year, but it took me a couple weeks to get to the final page. Not because it was difficult to read, but because I enjoyed my time with Lillian Boxfish too much to devour it all in one sitting.
I didn’t realize until the end of the book, but was excited to learn, that this book was based on a real woman’s life. I’ve already added the titles by Margaret Fishback to my TBR list.
