Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg is a wonderful journey back to the Great Depression.

Wait, what?

Okay, Mazie’s story isn’t all sunshine and daisies. In fact, there’s very little sunshine and no daisies. It is the Great Depression, after all. But how does someone, a good someone, a good someone with just a little bit of means in a world where no one no longer has any, cope with such a difficult situation?

They can smoke, drink and become a saint.

Attenberg creates a flawed protagonist in the land of the flawed. It is beautifully written, and sheds light on just a little bit of humanity at a time when it was otherwise difficult to find some.
